As you can probably tell from the belly in the photo taken yesterday- there is still no baby. I must admit that a few days ago I really wasn’t bothered by the thought of going into overtime (hmm- perhaps am watching too much World Cup action). Now that we may actually have quite a few more days to wait - not so pleased. Midwives keep reminding us that it is perfectly normal for first babies to be late. Of course once you hit 40 weeks the clock starts ticking to a medical induction. Sounds fun eh? You should hear some of the non- medical interventions that have been recommended to us. Of course since no one really knows how labour starts (in humans that is - according to the midwife they have figured out the process in sheep - go figure) all these suggestions are purely speculative. Many of them seem to involve putting the pregnant women through major discomfort. Eating spicy food, going on long walks, driving on bumpy roads with bad suspension and jumping up behind her while yelling (wait-that last one is for hiccups- but would probably work). Apparently when pregnant with me my mother was induced at 42 weeks. According to my brother (who was 13 at the time) she said it was so easy she wished he had been induced. Of course I was also delivered by forceps-which from what I understand isn’t too fun. I think she was either given large doses of drugs (it was the 70's ya know) or she was lying to my brother so as not to put him off the whole birthing process (not like he would ever be giving birth himself). So as I sit here trying to convince the soon to be evicted baby not to jump on my squished tummy full of spicy Indian food I realize that this baby and I have a lot in common already - we both put off scary overwhelming tasks ‘till the very last minute. Lets hope the mini-procrastinator gets it going before 42 weeks.

40 + 3

In Japan, pregnancy is a ten month long game. Go figure.
