First Words

I had predicted that Finn's first words would be cat-centric: Loco, or cat or kitty or even meow. However, we've been playing a game in the tub where he throws toys out of the tub and then stands up and waves at them while I say "say bye-bye to the blue boat" (or turtle, shark, etc). So now he's very into bye-bye and this afternoon when we stopped by my bosses house to pick up our lawn chairs, he waved and said "bye-bye." And he has been saying it with every wave ever since. To accurately imagine him saying it, picture Blanche Dubois: a very southern, falsettoed kind of "Bah-bye."

Finn is also making strides in non-verbal communication. He was kind of freaking out at the dinner table when he ran out of food he likes (cheese, fruit, and... no, that's it really). He'd tense everything up and shake his fists above his head. It was an alarming sight. But he's since learned the sign for "more" or a version of it and delights in using it - and in getting more cheese and fruit. He'll often wake from naps asking for "more" - probably meaning that he's hungry because he hasn't really expanded it to include non-food items even though we've tried introducing the concept of "more" swinging at the park or "more" reading books at home. We also tried to introduce the sign for "cheese" the other night at dinner. This just seemed to confuse the issue and Finn began signing "Mor-eese" or "Che-ore" and just throwing his hands up in confusion. So we'll stick with "more" for now.

Canine Encounters

We went to a barbecue at my boss's house. Liz has two dogs and two cats, three of whom delighted Finn (the second cat is 17 years old and only the foolhardy mess with him - we prevented Finn from doing so). Rufus, the smaller of the dogs, and Gibson, the cat, although friendly, quickly got their fill of Finn. Marley was much more a kindred spirit. Finn spent a lot of time petting, being licked and getting knocked over. Much food was eaten by all, and many, many, far too many desserts.

I'm 11 months old

I wave "bye-bye" when we drop Daddy off at work. I also occasionally wave to people we meet on the street.

I love to stare. I love to point. If I were any older and not as cute I could get in a lot of trouble!

I love to “misbehave”. If you tell me something is “no” I will giggle and immediately repeat the action.

I still love the cat – too bad she hates me. I try to be “gentle” with her – but she still runs away every time she sees me coming.

I love blueberries and cheese.

I love to read – the only problem - Mummy and Daddy can’t keep up with my fast page-turning skills!

I can “walk” as long as I am pushing something – a box, a laundry hamper, a chair…..

I love music – when a tune comes on the radio I bop my head and if I really like it I clap my hands!
